Host Protection & insurance
Wheelhouse Host Protection is a damage-coverage program that supplements your existing RV insurance. It is not insurance you buy separately and it doesn't replace your own policy. Here is what it covers and what it doesn't.

What Host Protection covers
Host Protection covers eligible accidental damage to a listed trailer caused by a guest during a confirmed booking, up to a coverage limit of $10,000 per stay. Examples of typically eligible damage:
- Interior damage — broken fixtures, stained or torn upholstery, scorched countertops, water damage from spills.
- Exterior damage — dents, scrapes, broken windows, awning tears caused during the stay.
- Appliance damage — broken refrigerators, ovens, AC units caused by guest misuse during the booking window.
- Theft of attached furnishings or equipment listed on the inventory record at the start of the booking.
Coverage is paid out after the host's security deposit is exhausted and any other applicable insurance has been pursued.
What it doesn't cover
- Pre-existing damage not documented before the booking. Take photos at every check-in and check-out.
- Normal wear and tear — small dings, fading, faint stains, light carpet wear.
- Personal propertythe host stored in the trailer that wasn't part of the listing.
- Damage from prohibited activities on the listing — pets when the listing said no pets, smoking when prohibited, parties when not allowed.
- Damage outside the booking window, before check-in or after check-out.
- Mechanical or structural failuresthat weren't caused by the guest.
- Bodily injury to guests, hosts, or third parties. Personal liability requires the host's own insurance.
- Damage during transit if the host personally delivered or towed. Standard auto/towing insurance applies during transport.
- Acts of nature, theft of the trailer itself, vandalism by non-guests. File these with your primary insurer.
Security deposits
Hosts may set a security deposit on each listing. The deposit is authorized — not captured — on the guest's payment method at the time of booking and held until 72 hours after check-out.
- If no claim is filed within 72 hours of check-out, the authorization is released automatically and the guest sees the hold drop off.
- If a claim is filed, the deposit may be captured up to the documented damage amount, after which Host Protection covers the remainder up to the policy limit.
- Disputes about deposit captures are reviewed by our trust & safety team — both sides get to submit evidence.
Filing a claim
File a claim within 72 hours of check-out. Late claims may be denied because evidence becomes hard to attribute to a specific stay.
- Document the damage. Photos and short videos with timestamps. Compare against the check-in photos you took before the guest arrived.
- Get a repair estimate. A written quote from a qualified repair shop, dealer, or restoration specialist. Receipts for parts and labor are accepted after the work is done.
- Open a claim from the booking page on Host bookings → “Report damage.” Attach photos, the estimate, and a brief description.
- Wait for our review. We respond within three business days. If we need more information, we'll ask once. Most claims close within ten business days.
- Resolution.Approved claims are paid out via Stripe to the host's connected account. Denied claims include a written reason and an appeal path.
Carry your own RV / rental insurance
Host Protection is not a substitute for proper RV insurance. Most home and standard auto policies do not cover the commercial use of a recreational vehicle, and they almost never cover damage caused by paying guests. We strongly recommend hosts who rent their unit on Wheelhouse carry a policy specifically rated for short-term rental of an RV or trailer. Speak to a licensed agent in your state.
Guest peace of mind
Guests don't purchase Wheelhouse insurance — but every booking is covered by our payment protection. If the host cancels last-minute, fails to deliver a paid trailer, or misrepresents the listing, you're entitled to a full refund per the cancellation policy. If your trip is unsafe to occupy on arrival, document it and contact us within 24 hours of check-in for a refund or a comparable rebooking.
Host Protection is provided by Wheelhouse, not an insurance carrier. Coverage limits, exclusions, and the claims process are subject to the Terms of Service. Hosts are responsible for carrying their own appropriate RV, commercial, or rental insurance.
